Minister Opens Agribusiness Expo - Week 11

Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources Larry Cartwright opened the second Agribusiness Expo in Freeport at the Goombay Park on Friday. It is the sixth of 12 Family Island Expos that will take place this year. The two-day expo is being held in honour of the late BAIC deputy chairman Ron Darville, who was instrumental in launching the backyard farming campaign. His widow, Sheila Darville, assisted in the ribbon cutting.

HOLOCAUST survivor Rena Finder shocked her audience of more than 300 people in a first hand account of her horrific experiences and subsequent salvation in Nazi-occupied Germany. Ms Finder, who shared her harrowing story for the first time in The Bahamas at the Sheraton Resort on Thursday night, spoke of how she and her race were terrorised by a country she had previously believed to be “cultured,” all because of her Jewish heritage.

Apparently, Bill Gross picks movies as well as investments.Bond investor Gross, who runs the world's largest mutual fund Pimco Total Return , is known for his quirky letters to investors. In the past he has dispensed love advice (specifically for Europe) and written about why he hates automatic flush toilets.  His letter this month, which came out on Tuesday, instead offers movie advice. Gross' big screen pick is The Great Escape.

A white Mississippi man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2011 murder of an African-American man, with the judge calling it an inexcusable, "despicable" crime. Deryl Dedmon pleaded guilty to murder and a hate-crime charge before a judge in Jackson on Wednesday afternoon, admitting to the June killing of James Craig Anderson. Hinds County Circuit Judge Jeff Weill sentenced him to two concurrent life terms, saying, "This craven act isn't who we are."

President apologizes for band chnats - Week 10

A university president apologized after members of the school's band yelled "where's your green card" at a Latino player during a NCAA basketball tournament game Thursday. TV cameras captured the incident during the University of Southern Mississippi-Kansas State University game at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh. As Kansas State point guard Angel Rodriguez shot free throws, several people could clearly be heard with the green card chant.

A case involving the fatal shooting of an unarmed Florida teen, which has sparked outrage and calls for justice, is in the hands of the state attorney's office. Police say Trayvon Martin, 17, was returning from the convenience store to the home of his father's fiancee in a gated community in Sanford, Florida, around sunset on February 26.A neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman, 28, saw the teen and called 911 to report a suspicious man, authorities said.

Gunman kills 1, injures 3 outside courthouse - Week 10

A gunman killed one person and injured three others when he fired outside a Texas courthouse Wednesday, officials said. Police said the suspected shooter, 41-year-old Bartholomew Granger, was a defendant in an aggravated sexual assault trial at the courthouse in Beaumont, Texas. Two of those wounded -- including Granger's 20-year-old daughter -- were witnesses in the trial, which had started Tuesday and was continuing Wednesday, police said.

POLICE have stopped their search for a Millennium Gardens family of five who disappeared without a trace over the weekend. According to press liaison officer Insp Chrislyn Skippings, the missing mother and her four children have been in contact with family members and are in good health. Marsha Hepburn Peters, 34, and her four children - Joel,12, Shamar, 8, Charis, 6, and Zion, 2 - became the subject of a widespread police search after they disappeared on Sunday

THE TOP teams in Bahamas Scholastic Sports Association - the smaller private schools in the Bahamas - squared off this week in a battle for the coveted title of BSSA basketball champions.
In the feature matchup of the playoffs, the pennant winning Teleos Christian Cherubims senior boys won the championship. They completed an undefeated season with a 47-35 victory over Hope Academy.

Plane Crash on Long Island - Week 9

An aircraft was forced to make a crash landing at Deadman's Cay Airport in Long Island on Friday afternoon. Problems with the landing gear of a Southern Air plane, flying from Nassau, caused the crash, which has left the plane in the bush at the end of the runway. There are no reported injuries.

At least 62 people were killed Thursday in Syria as former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan cautioned against outside military intervention, saying it could worsen an already precarious situation. But, Annan told the Arab League summit in Cairo, "the violence and killings must stop immediately."

At least 39 people were killed in Syria on Tuesday as government forces took aim at citizens across the country, opposition activists said. The deaths included 23 people in the opposition stronghold of Homs.

Prison Bus in Crash - Week 8

A prison bus transporting prisoners to court this morning collided with a garbage truck on the Eastern Road shortly after 9.30am.
No one was injured. As a result of the accident, two prison buses were damaged and prisoners had to be transported onto another bus.

On February 20, tensions between KFC management and the Bahamas Hotel, Catering and Allied Workers Union (BHCAWU) escalated after the fast food chain cancelled its voluntary recognition of the union as the bargaining agent for KFC employees. Following the announcement, staff staged a sit-down, forcing the closure of the company's New Providence outlets which affected more than 300 employees. Later that evening, Mr Foulkes certified BHCAWU as the official bargaining agent for KFC staff. KFC Nassau said all stores will remain closed until a new industrial agreement is reached and employees will not be paid during this time.

This is the woman now being hauled before the courts for abettment to murder in the death of her banker husband Stephen Sherman. Renae Sherman along with two other men were charged before magistrate court today in connection Stephen’s death. One of the accuse was on bail for the murder of a young man some three years ago. We are recycling murders and grooming new one.

PLP leader Perry Christie told Fort Charlotte constituents that finance minister Zhivargo Laing shares the blame for high unemployment levels and a bad economy. Speaking at the opening of the constituency's PLP headquarters last night, Mr Christie called Mr Laing an "abysmal failure" and said everything he's touched has gone from bad to worse. "The footprints and the fingerprints of Zhivargo Laing are all over your pain and suffering," he said.

AS the KFC labour dispute continues to rage, Minister of Labour Dion Foulkes reaffirmed that the Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union is the official bargaining agent for fast-food chain's staff.
On Monday, in a historic decision, KFC management withdrew its voluntary recognition of the BHCAWU as the bargaining agent for employees. Following the announcement, KFC staff staged a sit-down forcing the temporary closure of the company's nine New Providence locations.

Jurors on Wednesday found former University of Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely V guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend, NBC News reported. Huguely of Chevy Chase, Md., was charged in the death of 22-year-old Yeardley Love, whose body was found battered, bleeding and bruised in the bedroom of her Charlottesville apartment in the early hours of May 3, 2010. The jury of seven men and five women also found Huguely guilty of grand larceny but not guilty on four other charges: felony murder in the commission or attempted commission of a robbery; robbery; burglary - breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny; and statutory burglary - breaking and entering with intent to commit assault and battery.

49 killed in Argentian train crash - Week 6

A packed train slammed into the barrier at the end of the line at a busy Buenos Aires station, killing 49 people and injuring hundreds of morning commuters in Argentina's worst train accident in decades. Passengers had been packed in tight, sandwiched between bicycles and the few seats, many without so much as a strap to hold onto. Federal Police Commissioner Nestor Rodriguez said Wednesday's dead included 48 adults and one child.

TWO American writers for an influential travel magazine are threatening to expose what they believe is a theft racket at a local resort, after losing hundreds of dollars in vacation money. Californian Sharon Cummings said her visit to Nassau quickly turned into a "nightmare" after $900 was stolen from a safe in the room she shared with her husband at the Nassau Palm Hotel on West Bay Street. Whitney Houston, a multiplatinum pop/R&B singer who ruled the charts for decades beginning in the mid-1980s, has died, her publicist Kristen Foster confirmed to MTV News on Saturday (February 11). Houston was 48. According to CNN, Beverly Hills Police confirmed the singer was found dead inside a Beverly Hilton hotel room at approximately 3:55 p.m. PT. The cause of death is being investigated.

Land Recorvery Deal Signed - Week 4

THE Government yesterday recovered 5,825 acres of land with the signing of a revised Heads of Agreement with the I-Group for its Mayaguana development project.Tourism Minister Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace praised developers for their willingness to cooperate with the government to bring the $1.8 billion project in line with its revised Family Island model. Mr Vanderpool-Wallace said the sizeable recovery of prime waterfront and inland acreage was equal to getting the island of Bimini back.
